St. John's Towamensing Lutheran Church

Established 1798 – Palmerton, Pennsylvania

Q: What is a Lutheran?

A: A Lutheran is a Christian. We are Christians who Believe in a living Lord and God who has revealed himself to us in the Bible and is still active in the life of the Church. We come from a tradition started by many but most signifiantly Martin Luther. He was a priest, a professor, and a very reluctant revolutionary. His teaching was that man has a direct relationship to God through Jesus, the Christ, through His life, death, and resurrection. He is known through His Word and in the Sacraments He taught us to share. Only through our relationship with Jesus Christ, do we have forgiveness of sin and eternal life.

Q: Why is belonging to a church important?

A: Belonging to a church is not important. Belonging to THE Church is vital. The Church is all those who believe Jesus Christ is our lord and Savior. It is Jesus Church to which need to belong. He challenges us to be His. Not part. Not half-way. The truth is that we cannot do it alone. Scripture teaches us that to be the Church we have to be united by the Holy Spirit who gives each of us different gifts. Only when we who have been given different gifts put them to use do we fulfill what God has intended us to be.

Q: What is so different from other faith backgrounds?

A: Struggle. St Paul wrote that we are to work out our salvation with fear and trembling. That means that we don’t always have God completely figured out. If we did, we wouldn’t need forgiveness at all. Then, if once we had it all figured out we would not need forgivness at all. We believe we are in a constant battle, all our lives with our sin and the need to receive God’s grace. We believe we are to struggle to be what God calls us to be. Still, we need God’s grace, which comes through His church and His Word in Christ, to constantly be forgiven and renewed through our Lord Jesus and His means of grace. God’s grace is his absolute love for all His Children. It is also our hope. We try to hold on to the hope.

Q: What makes St.John’s special?

A: We are the biggest mix of things you’ve ever seen. We are an old congregation going back to the historic roots of this country. We are a middle aged church with those who have experienced a lot of life and find genuine joy in being together. We are a young church with Christ being taught and loved. We are noisy and loud. We are quiet and contemplative. We use all forms of worship, traditional and new to praise our Lord. No worship is completely the same. We use ancient forms and new forms. To be whole, we have to use everything God has blessed us with to praise him. We also need those with new ideas to challenge us and new brothers and sisters in christ to keep growing in faith.

Q: What is the hardest part of being a Christian at St John’s?

A: Not being judgmental. As the bible teaches, all of us fall short of the glory of God. When the point of being together is to share the love of Jesus and there are many who differ from what we think that means, we need to keep falling back on the love of Jesus. He loved the last, the least, the lost and even what the world thinks are losers. He can transform all in His own time and in His own way. Stay in the love of Jesus. That is what we try to do.
