Greetings! I hope that this website and blog reach not only St. John’s members, but also the larger faith community in the Palmerton area and beyond. If you are a member of St. Johns and want to be involved in this kind of “distance” ministry, please send me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org. We welcome all ideas!
I suppose the first blog post on this website should start with its origins. Because I love St. John’s but live too far away to be present every week, my contemplation about how to serve led me to the creation of stjohnstowamensing.org. Over the past few weeks, I have thoroughly enjoyed highlighting the wonderful and beautiful things that St. John’s has to offer. It has helped me remember that this place of my childhood – where I grew and learned about God – is alive, well, and flourishing.
But as I try to hone the practice of living my faith without fear, I realize that I cannot only work behind the scenes in creating things that will hopefully reach a wider audience. I have to practice what I (proverbially) preach, which leads to overcoming my fear of posting on a blog. And I suppose in many ways that is what we are all called to do. I believe that many of us already know what we need to do in order to lead better, braver lives, but it is so difficult to put these intentions into action. And I also believe that is where faith comes in. For me, God is not felt in obvious moments of clarity, but in the quiet whisper that calls me out when I avoid rather than face what needs to be done. And so I invite you to do the same – embrace the discomfort of becoming more involved and visible in your faith, because this is how we grow as people of Christ.
