FATHER’S DAY WORSHIP SERVICE: Sunday, June 21, 2020 at 9:30 AM

Leader: Our Heavenly Father, we gather to worship you this day and we celebrate all fathers who take up your call to raise their children in a godly way.
People: We long for the perfect protection of a father, for strong arms that encircle us, holding us tight to a broad chest and a warm heart.
Leader: Arms that toss us into the ear, screaming with laughter and a little fear, even
though we know those arms will always catch us.
People: From the moment we gasp our first breath of air, we long for the perfect father.
Leader: We long for a father who sacrifices, who lays down his time to play games, read our favorite book one more time, to walk with and listen.
People: Who reaches deeper to provide a good home, good food, and good gifts. We long for a father who always protects, always cheers, and always sacrifices.
Leader: Some of us are blessed to find bits and pieces of these longings in human form,
People: Like sun through stained glass—a brilliant picture, illuminated by our Father who satisfies these longings.
Leader: No human father can perfectly satisfy. Look up and know your Father in Heaven gave you those longings and only He can perfectly fulfill them.
People: His strong arms protect, His words bring life and light. His perfect sacrifice draws us to His side, where we can hear His heart beating with perfect love for us.
Leader: We celebrate our fathers on earth,
People: And our Father in heaven.
Leader: We give thanks for the longing,
People: And we give thanks for the love!

OPENING HYMN: “This Is My Father’s World”
1) This is my Father’s world, And to my listening ears, All nature sings, and round me
rings The music of the spheres. This is my Father’s world; I rest me in the thought
Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas; His hand the wonders wrought.
2) This is my Father’s world; The birds their carols raise; The morning light, the lily
white, Declare their maker’s praise. This is my Father’s world, He shines in all that’s
fair. In the rustling grass I hear him pass; He speaks to me everywhere.
3) This is my Father’s world; Oh, let me not forget That, though the wrong seems oft
so strong, God is the ruler yet. This is my Father’s world; Why should my heart be
sad? The Lord is king, let the heavens ring; God reigns, let the earth be glad!

Leader: The grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
People: And also with you.
Leader: Lord, have mercy upon us.
People: Lord, have mercy upon us.
Leader: Christ, have mercy upon us.
People: Christ, have mercy upon us.
Leader: Lord, have mercy upon us and the whole world.
People: Lord, have mercy upon us and the whole world.

All: Teach us, good Lord God, to serve you as you deserve, to give and not to count the cost, to fight and not to heed the wounds, to toil and not to seek for rest, to labor and not to ask for reward, except that of knowing Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

HOLY SCRIPTURE: St. Matthew 10:24-39
24 “A disciple is not above the teacher, nor a slave above the master;
25 it is enough for the disciple to be like the teacher, and the slave like the master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household!
26 “So have no fear of them; for nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing secret that will not become known.
27 What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaim from the housetops.
28 Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father.
30 And even the hairs of your head are all counted.
31 So do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows.
32 “Everyone therefore who acknowledges me before others, I also will acknowledge before my Father in heaven;
33 but whoever denies me before others, I also will deny before my Father in heaven.
34 “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.
35 For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;
36 and one’s foes will be members of one’s own household.
37 Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me;
38 and whoever does not take up the cross and follow me is not worthy of me.
39 Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it.

GOSPEL HYMN: “Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus”
1) Stand up, stand up for Jesus, As soldiers of the cross, Lift high his royal banner; It
must not suffer loss. From victory unto victory His army he shall lead, Till every foe
is vanquished And Christ is Lord indeed.
2) Stand up, stand up for Jesus; The trumpet call obey; Stand forth in mighty conflict In this his glorious day. Let all his faithful serve him Against unnumbered foes; Let
courage rise with danger, And strength to strength oppose.
3) Stand up, stand up for Jesus; Stand in his strength alone; The arm of flesh will fail
you, You dare not trust your own. Put on the Gospel armor; Each peace put on with
prayer. Where duty calls or danger, Be never wanting there.
4) Stand up, stand up for Jesus, The strife will not be long; This day the din of battle,
The next the victor’s song. The soldiers, overcoming, Their crown of life shall see,
And with the King of glory Shall reign eternally.

HYMN OF THE DAY: “I Was There to Hear Your Borning Cry”

1) I was there to hear your borning cry, I’ll be there when you grow old. I rejoiced the
day you were baptized to see your life unfold. I was there when you were but a
child, with a faith to suit you well; in a blaze of light you wandered off to find where
demons dwell.
2) When you heard the wonder of the Word, I was there to cheer you on; you were
raised to praise the living Lord, to whom you now belong. If you find someone to
share your time and you join your hearts as one, I’ll be there to make your verses
rhyme from dusk till rising sun.
3) In the middle ages of your life, not too old, no longer young, I’ll be there to guide
you through the night, complete what I have done. When the evening gently closes
in, and you shut your weary eyes, I’ll be there as I have always been with just one
more surprise.
Repeat Verse 1

The Creed:

Leader: Do you believe in God the Father?
All: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
Leader: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?
All: I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven and was seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
Leader: Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?
All: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
The Baptism
Prayer for Parents & Sponsors

All: We welcome you Cora Joan into the Lord’s family. We receive you as a sister in Christ, children of the same heavenly Father, and a worker with us in the kingdom of God.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
