WORSHIP SERVICE: August 2, 2020 – 9:30 AM The 9 th Sunday after Pentecost
Opening Song: “Holy God, We Praise Your Name”
1) Holy God, we praise your name; Lord of all, we bow before you.
All on earth your scepter claim, All in heaven above adore you.
Infinite your vast domain, Everlasting is your reign.
2) Hark! The glad celestial hymn Angel choirs above are raising;
Cherubim and seraphim, In unceasing chorus praising,
Fill the heavn’s with sweet accord: “Holy, holy, holy Lord!”
3) Lo, the apostolic train Join your sacred name to hallow;
Prophets swell the glad refrain, And the white robed martyrs follow;
And from morn to set of sun Through the Church the song goes on.
4) Holy Father, holy Son, Holy Spirit, three we name you,
Though in essence only one; Undivided God we claim you
And, adoring, bend the knee While we own the mystery.
Greeting and Confession of Sin:
Pastor: The grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy
Spirit be with you all.
PEOPLE: AND ALSO WITH YOU.
Pastor: Let us be ourselves before God. He knows us inwardly, better than we know
ourselves and yet He loves us completely. He forgives all and can change all through Jesus
Christ who has given us the right to ask. Now join with me in opening the way for God’s
forgiving and steadfast love.
(Tune: “This Land Is My Land”)
The Lord has power, to free us all!
PEOPLE: HE MADE THE WORLD, HE HAS THE POWER.
And if we tell him, we have offended,
HE HAS THE POWER TO SET THINGS RIGHT.
I AM A SINNER, A LONELY SINNER, AND I AM GUILTY, I KNOW I AM.
I BROKE AWAY, I BROKE FROM GOD, AND ON MY OWN, I WENT MY WAY.
LORD, I DESERVE TO BE REJECTED, BUT I AM SORRY FOR ALL MY SIN.
I WANT TO BE, AT ONE WITH YOU, TAKE MY GUILT, ACCEPT ME AGAIN.
I PLEAD FOR PARDON, TO SPARE MY LIFE, BECAUSE OF JESUS, WHO BORE THE CROSS.
HE SUFFERED FOR US, MADE ALL THINGS RIGHT, NOW I AM FOUND WHO ONCE WAS
Pastor: Now as your servant, ordained by Christ, I speak as Jesus, speaking His Word. I now
forgive you, says God our Father, so says His Son and Spirit too.

Prayer of the Day:
PEOPLE: GLORIOUS GOD, YOUR GENEROSITY WATERS THE WORLD WITH GOODNESS, AND
YOU COVER CREATION WITH ABUNDANCE. AWAKEN IN US A HUNGER FOR THE FOOD
THAT SATISFIES BOTH BODY AND SPIRIT, AND WITH THIS FOOD FILL ALL THE STARVING
WORLD, THROUGH YOUR SON, JESUS CHRIST, OUR SAVIOR AND LORD. AMEN.
Holy Gospel: St. Matthew 14:13-21
Song: “Sweet Hour of Prayer”
1) Sweet hour of prayer, sweet hour of prayer, That calls me from a world of care,
And bids me at my Father’s throne m Make all my wants and wishes known!
In seasons of distress and grief, My soul has often found relief,
And oft escaped the tempter’s snare By thy return, sweet hour of prayer.
2) Sweet hour of prayer, sweet hour of prayer, Thy wings shall my petition bear
To Him, whose truth and faithfulness Engage the waiting soul to bless:
And since he bids me seek His face, Believe His word, and trust His grace,
I’ll cast on Him my every care, And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer.
3) Sweet hour of prayer, sweet hour of prayer, May I thy consolation share,
Till from Mount Pisgah’s lofty height I view my home, and take my flight;
In my immortal flesh I’ll rise To seize the everlasting prize,
And shout while passing through the air, Farewell, farewell, sweet hour of prayer.
Prayer of the People
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be
done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our
trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and
Pastor: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Pastor: Lift up your hearts.
People: We lift them to the Lord.
Pastor: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People: It is right to give him thanks and praise.
Words of Institution: (tune is to “Blowing in the Wind”)
All: Jesus our Lord was betrayed on that night as he sat and ate bread with his friends.
He broke from a loaf then he gave each a piece, telling them all what it meant.
This is my body which I give to you, before I am broken in death.
So eat it my friends remembering my death. Eat it remembering my death.
Then Jesus our Lord at the close of the meal, lifted a cup filled with wine.
He gave thanks to God, then he gave each a drink, telling them all what it meant.
This cup is a covenant sealed by God, that guarantees forgiveness for life.
Prayer Before Communion:
People: O Jesus, our great high priest, be present with us as you were present with your
disciples and make yourself known to us in the breaking of bread.
Distribution of the Host: The Fraction
Prayer After Communion:
People: Almighty God, you provide the true bread from heaven, your Son, Jesus Christ our
Lord. Grant that we who have received the Sacrament of his body and blood may abide in
him and he in us, that we may be filled with the power of his endless life, now and
Closing Song: “Pass It On”
1) It only takes a spark to get a fire going. And soon all those around can warm up in
it’s glowing. That’s how it is with God’s love, once you’ve experienced it, you
spread his love to everyone, you want to pass it on.
2) What a wondrous time is spring (not 2020’s) when all the trees are budding; the
birds begin to sing, the flowers start their blooming. That’s how it is with God’s
love, once you’ve experienced it, you want to sing, it’s fresh like spring, you want to
pass it on.
3) I wish for you my friend, this happiness that I’ve found. You can depend on Him, it
matters not where you’re bound. I’ll shout it from the mountain top, I want the
world to know; the Lord of love has come to me I want to pass it on. I’ll shout it
from the mountain top, I want my world to know the Lord of love has come to me, I
want, to pass, it on…
